SKETCHBOOK: PART 2

My post was getting a little long yesterday, so I thought it would be nice to break it up a little bit! :) Be sure to check out yesterday's post here!

This painting has been in process for like, over a week now. lol. It took me a while because I was slightly intimidated by the tiny detail at the top of the cup. But I found a photo that I used for reference, here. I think I did the grey background a little too dark. But I still like it anyway.

Hey professional painters, question, I don't own a shop or anything, and haven't sold my work at all... But is it copyright infringement to use a photo as reference, paint it, and sell it? I have been thinking about starting an Etsy Shop, but stuff like that kind of makes me nervous. I would love it if you knew anything about it! Thanks!

Mr. Brown Bear, you so vicious! And super cute all at the same time! Why do wild animals have to look so darn cuddly?? I had a lot of fun painting him, trying not to focus too much on the details, and just getting him down. I worked from this photo as a reference. I have a couple more bears that are in my Art - To Paint board on Pinterest, that I hope to keep painting them. It seems like a good brown color study.

And I saw this photo on Pinterest, and I just had to give it a shot. I gave a sneak peek photo on Instagram, hahaha. People thought it was going to be bacon! It didn't really turn out as I was expecting. It suddenly became too detailed for me, and I started losing interest, patience, and focus. Ah well. I think you can tell it's a flower, right? Haha.

I feel like I am really beginning to love watercolor! My supplies (watercolor paper) seem to be dwindling fast... Even though I have been taking my 9x12 inch sheets and dividing them into 2 or 4 and painting on that kind of small scale. I am enjoying painting on these small scales, it makes for a quick, fun painting. And I feel like I am learning quite a bit about watercolors.

I have been thinking about purchasing the peerless watercolors, but right now, they cost a little more than I am willing to spend. I am SO cheap people. I have been eyeing them though. I will probably get them before summer hits because I can really see how they would be convenient for travel and painting while out and about. I plan to do a lot of that this summer.

I thought I was going to have more time or inspiration to work on stuff yesterday, but that didn't happen. I am still happy with the amount of work that I did last week! If you've made it this far, thanks so much for stopping by!

Have you worked on anything artsy-fartsy lately? I would love to see, check out these link ups below, and join in on the fun! Meet new artists, and bloggy friends!

  8. Beautiful watercolors! So pretty! I'm no expert on copyright issues, but I'm fairly certain it is a copyright infringement to sell a painting from a photo that isn't yours... probably best just to paint from your own photos so you won't have to worry about getting into any legal tangles! Good luck with your shop -- Etsy is a great place to start and it is so easy to set up!

  12. Thanks for the visit to my blog. I really like the way you apply watercolors. The bear is wonderful and pretty scary. You are so right. Some of the animals that look cuddly would eat you if they could get to you. Your flower is my kind of art. Normally I make flowers that fill the page. (I work small too to save that valuable watercolor paper.)

  13. These are so pretty and I can tell you're having a good time doing them. There's a happy energy in them. You can use photographs for reference, but your work should be your own compositions and arrangements. It's more "you" that way -- which is pretty amazing, seeing your self portrait :)

  14. Love that bear! And yes, he does look a little scary...but awesome!

Not nearly enough craft time round these parts of late. I'm slowly working on some stitching and some pom-pom-ing, but I really want to do some paper collages and art mail packages. One day, one day...

  15. Unfortunatly it is an infringment of copyright painting from photos and selling them. It is a shame isn't it because there is so much loveliness out there to paint. However there are sites were you can get copyright free stuff.
Anyway love the paintings Adrienne keep them coming!

  16. Lovely watercolors..beautiful colors..the bear is fabulous..the flower is gorgeous..wonderful energy..your passion really shines through..wonderful pieces.

I take my own photos and for me, they are my own personal art, and would not want someone to use them unless they asked and it was ok with me.
If you have "permission" from an artist/photographer then it is simple, but you always must ask and to kindly respect the rights of that artist. Some people do not mind at all. and there are some sites that provide free images and allow you to use them, which is great! Good luck and best wishes with selling your wonderful art! Shine on!

  20. hello Adrienne thanks for visiting my blog and your nice comments. I like your painting of a teacup. Its ok to use a photo as a reference point. I was looking at your lists of things to do..why dont you just see if you can do one this week that makes you happy...good luck

  21. The copyright thing is a pain, but many people are happy to give permission so it is a matter of chasing down the original photographer... sometimes easier said than done, but it often works out and you can make some great contacts along the way... there is a grey area when it comes to commercial products photography here in Australia... I can take a photo of a product or use it from a website if it is available for promotional purposes or purchase but can't use an image that someone else has taken of the same product... confusing huh... but just take your camera everywhere and snap and build up your own folder of images... it works too... great bear as well.. that is very cool!!!

PS love your list fort the 52 list thing.... grow your won food huh... we have just planted out some vegies, but think they are more to feed the wildlife than us!!!

  22. I thought the cup painting is quite nice and I like the colors a lot. I didn't think the rose painting was bacon at all.

all the copyright issues are such a gray area. I do agreed with some of the bloggers comment here. get the photographers' permission or take your own photos or search for copyright free photos. there is an area in flickr that offers no copyright restrictions photos - http://www.flickr.com/commons

anyway, thanks for dropping by my blog. have a great day.

  23. Painting is not so difficult and making cup plates and flowers is the most easy items whose paining we are doing from childhood but yes, making it using water color is very difficult. These are done beautifully. Photobooth Toronto
